LIPO Accident

And this is why you charge the LIPO’s in a fire proof bag and stay close!

After an afternoon of driving around and testing the robot out the battery was being charged ready for the next day. As per rule 2 (and good practice):

2. If LiPo batteries are used, any charging must be done inside a fire-proof bag or box, available from many places that stock the batteries, such as HobbyKing. This is to ensure you don’t have any accidents.

Due to it being in the bag, it wasn’t clear something had gone wrong, but the smell indicated something clearly had. I don’t have any photos of that as my first priority was to get the battery outside where it couldn’t do any damage if it were to get worse.

I left the bag outside as whatever had leaked from the battery had soaked into the bag and it smelt as well. I wanted to go to bed so decided to leave everything where it was and deal with it in the morning.

This photo was taken the following day and I think the swelling is worse than the night before.

Looking closer, it seems as though two of the cells have split. I could only see one last night, but then again it was left out in the damp and the temperature dropped below 0°c so was not a great environment for LIPO’s
